Since When Did Patriotism Mean Looking Away?

Becoming an American citizen is a choice. And when we took that oath, we meant it.

We pledged allegiance. We swore loyalty. We embraced this country as our home.

But somewhere along the way, patriotism stopped meaning love—and started meaning silence.

If we care about what happens beyond America’s borders, we’re questioned.
If we speak about suffering elsewhere, we’re accused of divided loyalty.
If we show compassion for a country in crisis—whether it’s Ukraine, Syria, or even the nation we once called home—we’re told to focus on “real” Americans.

But isn’t the whole point of America that we don’t have to choose between patriotism and humanity?

That we can love this country and still care about the world beyond it?

Because the moment loyalty means looking away—

That’s when we’ve truly lost what makes this country great.
